The John F. Gould Estate, Newburgh Free Library, and Art & Anthropology Press collaborated to connect Newburgh's Revolutionary past with its present through Newburgh and the Nation: The Art of John F. Gould, an exhibit opening October 16, 2025, at the Newburgh Free Library.
This exhibit launches the Library's extended commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. Displayed in its light-filled mezzanine are three original paintings by John F. Gould, shown together for the first time. The Last Great March (1782), The Last Cantonment (1782-1783), and Peace, 1783: A New Nation is Born each depicting historic scenes set in Newburgh, Vails Gate, and New Windsor during the end of the American Revolutionary War.
Art & Anthropology Press helped shape the design and campaign for the exhibition by creating visuals that convey a sense of living history, spark curiosity, and invite the community to engage with Gould's works of art. The exhibit also includes informational panels about his commercial illustrations for The Saturday Evening Post and Dime Detective Magazine.
The campaign began with a playful twist on Paul Revere's legendary ride. The Library's historian, who is also a colonial reenactor, was featured in a social media post dressed as a soldier while tossing flyers exclaiming "The Paintings Are Coming!"

The typography is inspired by broadsides—historic posters that served as the evocative newsfeeds of their day. An expressive wood-cut type carries that energy forward throughout the exhibition materials. Crops of the paintings shown in the banners reflect Gould's artistic precision and lifelong fascination with Hudson Valley landscapes.
On view through 2027, Newburgh and the Nation: The Art of John F Gould highlights the Hudson Valley's rich legacy and the vital roles artists and historians play in bridging the past to the present.
